The big question we all ask ourselves when planning a trip is when is the best time of year to do it? In my case, I usually have two aspects in mind when choosing the date: the weather and the available activities that can be done.
For all those who wish to visit Buenos Aires, knowing what the weather will be like is essential. In our city the differences between the four seasons are very marked. But since each person has their tastes and preferences in terms of temperatures, let’s see the characteristics of each one of them so that you can choose the ideal time of year for you. On the other hand, in Buenos Aires there are always interesting activities that you can enjoy. I have made a selection of some of the most outstanding events in every season, in case your trip coincides with them and you want to take advantage of them.
Summer (December 21st – March 20th)
Summer in Buenos Aires is hot and sunny with a temperature ranging between 18 and 32 degrees Celsius (65 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Average humidity is 68% with 9 rainy days per month. Summer is the time of year when it is more difficult to be outdoors, due to the combination of high temperatures and high humidity, which at certain times becomes suffocating and complicates walks around the city. In case you decide to visit the city in this season, do not forget to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and always carry fresh water to stay hydrated.
Main events of the Summer in Buenos Aires:
New Years festivities: On December 31st, the families usually gather at home to enjoy a great dinner and at midnight some display a battery of fireworks that add color to the night. In the case of international travelers, they have the option of celebrating the New Year with special parties that include dinner, toasts, tango show and dancing. Besides that, at the end of January the Chinese New Year celebrations stand out in a sector of the Belgrano neighborhood, known as “Chinatown”.
Carnival Celebrations: During the weekends of February and the carnival holidays, dozens of parades take place in the open air simultaneously in different parts of the city. The groups that represent the different neighborhoods of the city prepare all year round to animate Buenos Aires nights with dances, songs and a very colorful wardrobe. It is an ideal program for the whole family in which children dress up and have fun playing with water and foam.
Autumn (March 21st – June 20th)
Fall days in Buenos Aires are very pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 26 degrees Celsius (50 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). The average humidity is 77% with 8 rainy days per month. They are ideal months to visit Buenos Aires and enjoy the City. It is only necessary to have a light coat to be used mainly in the morning hours and at dusk when the temperature usually drops. An umbrella or a poncho never hurts. The enchanting autumn landscape of Buenos Aires makes you fall in love and the weather allows you to walk along its streets in a pleasant way.
Main Fall Events in Buenos Aires:
Opening of the season of the Teatro Colón: Although its unmissable guided tours are held throughout the year, it is around mid-March when the season of regular performances begins. For nine months there is an extensive program that includes opera, ballet, orchestras, choirs, interpreters and recitals among others. Due to its acoustic precision it is considered one of the most important lyrical theaters in the world.
International Book Fair: Buenos Aires is the city with the most bookstores in the world in relation to its population. Between the end of April and the beginning of May, the most important publishing and literary event in our country takes place, it is an exceptional opportunity to enjoy local and international literary production and various cultural activities.
Celebrations for the anniversary of the May Revolution: Every May 25th one of the most important events in our national history is commemorated; on May 25, 1810, the revolutionary process that unleashed years later in the Argentine Independence began. This historic date is celebrated with parades, typical meals, folk dance classes and official acts.
Winter (June 21st – September 20th)
Winter days in Buenos Aires are cool with temperatures ranging between 7 and 18 degrees Celsius (45 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit). Average humidity is 74% with 7 rainy days per month. Despite the cold winter weather, Buenos Aires does not snow, and you can walk outdoors normally wearing the appropriate coat. There are occasional days when the polar wind blows but it is supported very well with thermal clothing, a jacket, gloves and a scarf.
Main Winter Events in Buenos Aires:
Argentine Rural Exhibition: In the month of July, the great Argentine countryside festival is celebrated in Buenos Aires. It is an annual event organized by the Argentine Rural Society at the fairgrounds located in Palermo neighborhood. It constitutes the most important and traditional agricultural exhibition in Argentina in which the magnificent specimens of the various species and breeds of local livestock stand out.
Tango Festival and World Cup: It is in August when the most transcendent tango competition at the international level takes place; and the best tango dancers on the planet are chosen. Besides that, the tango festival serves as the perfect setting for the World Cup, where concerts, exhibitions, classes and talks on this theme are organized.
Federal Asado Championship: In the month of September, the best grill masters in the country come together to pay homage to the national dish: the asado (barbecue). It is a competition in which all Argentine provinces are represented and the best grill master in the country is chosen.
Spring (September 21st – December 20th)
Spring in Buenos Aires presents itself with very pleasant days, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 26 degrees Celsius (50 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). The average humidity is 66% with 9 rainy days per month. They are ideal months to visit Buenos Aires and enjoy pleasant walks outdoors. The stars during this season are the city parks, where you can marvel at the color and perfume of its vegetation.
Main events of Spring in Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires Marathon: The largest marathon in the southern hemisphere takes place in September. More than 12,000 runners from all over the world participate in it, and along its 42 kilometers (26 miles) the most important tourist attractions of our city can be seen.
The Night of the Museums: It is in November when all the museums of the city open their doors during the night for free, and hundreds of activities are carried out so that adults and children can get closer to museums and experience a very special night
Open House: During 48 hours in the month of November architecture and urbanism are celebrated by opening the doors of buildings of high aesthetic and cultural value.
Argentine Polo Open Championship: Between the end of November and the beginning of December, the most important interclub polo competition in the world takes place; where the best polo players meet at the Palermo Hippodrome known as the “Cathedral of Polo” and test their skills.
In summary, and answering our initial question, when is the best time to visit Buenos Aires? I recommend you to visit our city in the spring or in the fall when the temperatures are more pleasant; although winter, with a suitable coat, is also acceptable. If possible, I suggest avoiding the summer months due to the combination of heat and humidity. It will depend a lot on your tastes, but I can assure you that Buenos Aires is enjoyed all year round, each season offers you a unique landscape and activities and also, the temperatures are not extreme at any time.
