Experience the Gauchos near to Buenos Aires

If you are looking for things to do this week or over the weekend in Buenos Aires, you only need to travel a couple of hours from the centre of Buenos Aires and you will be amazed to find yourself in some of the most beautiful countryside Argentina has to offer. The area just outside of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, is home to ranches (estancias) and cowboys (gauchos) and is perfect if you want to escape the city that never sleeps. The Pampa area surrounding Buenos Aires can be a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of the city and a chance to experience the most genuine of Argentina’s countryside culture.

There are many different activities and tours which allow you to experience the estancias and gaucho way of life which are deeply engrained in the history and culture of Buenos Aires, here we will tell you a few options available in Buenos Aires:
  • A day trip to an Estancia: A day trip to an estancia will provide you with a great insight into the life of the gauchos as well as the culture of the estancias in the Pampa region of Buenos Aires. Each gaucho estancia will provide a complete program with a number of activities such as horse riding; a gaucho asado lunch; traditional Argentinean folkloric music and dance; and a show of the gaucho’s tradition and abilities on horses. See all the estancias available for day tours from Buenos Aires.
  • Gaucho Dinner show: If you prefer cultural experiences or are looking for an alternative to the tango dinner shows of Buenos Aires, there is a gaucho experience different to any other. The Opera Gaucho Dinner Show uses music and explores the tradition of the gauchos and the history and birth of Argentina. The gaucho show takes place in Latin America’s largest open air theatre called ‘La Rural’ and includes 50 dancers and horses. After the show there is a traditional Argentinean asado (barbeque) buffet where you can taste why Argentina is famous for its steaks. The Opera Pampa will give you an overall understanding of the history of Argentina. This month’s special offer by BsAs4u is the Opera Pampa which gives you 25% off the price; all you need to do is book it through the website!

  • Feria de Mataderos: If you don’t have time to travel out of Buenos Aires, make sure you visit the Feria de Mataderos in Buenos Aires. In its 25th year, the Fair of the Slaughter Houses (Feria de Mataderos) takes place every Sunday and Public Holiday from 11.00am until 8.00pm. It is one activity you must go to if you are in Buenos Aires over a weekend. The fair is off the traditional tourist sightseeing circuit in Buenos Aires but it is the most traditional fair in Buenos Aires, combining the Argentine culture with the gaucho traditions. The fair is split up into three areas made up of artistic performances of gaucho folklore; traditional gaucho handcrafts; and gaucho skills with horses. It is possible to visit the Feria de Mataderos on a private city tour or make your own travel plans. Read our previous entry about the Feria de Mataderos to find out more. The Fair will be cancelled if it rains and it is closed during the summer vacation, which runs from December to March, so make sure you check their calendar in their official website.

Learning more about the gauchos will give you a greater understanding of Argentina’s traditions, history and culture about the first inhabitants of the Pampas, so make sure you include a visit to a gaucho estancia or a gaucho activity in your travel schedule whilst visiting Argentina. You will have an unforgettable experience to tell everyone back home.
