Presidential Elections in Argentina – A democracy Party

This October 23rd there are going to be presidential elections in Argentina. Some people like to call this event a democracy party. Why is this? Because this beautiful country has a long history of political turmoil and democracy is our most esteemed good: it has come after paying a high historical price. Argentina suffered the misery of military dictatorships during the 70s and so-called “dirty war” so that’s why elections are not viewed only as a citizen´s duty but also a right and a celebration and on this 2011 election Argentine democracy demonstrates to be as healthy and vibrant as ever.

If you are visiting Argentina during this time of the year, we have some advice for you to bear in mind during Election Day:

First of all, the night before the election and during Election Day no alcohol can be sold, parties and public events are banned. The only places that are open are restaurants (no alcohol there either) and some of the cinema chains have a shorter schedule while others will open following their regular working hours. Most shops will probably remain closed.

Streets in downtown near Plaza de Mayo are probably going to be closed to the traffic in the evening, since there is a large demonstration expected to take place in order to show support for Cristina Kirchner, who, according to all polls is probably going to be the big winner, so, those travelers located in downtown area, close to Avenida de Mayo, Ave Corrientes or near the Obelisco who are expecting to be picked up for any activity during these days, can either set up a meeting point outside the Centro area, or to be ready to take a transportation to their tour meeting point in case will be difficult for transportations to drive until your hotel entrance.

So, if you are planning your vacations to Argentina be aware that on October 23rd the best option will be to take a walking tour across the city and enjoy the weird but unique atmosphere that you can only experience during Election Day.
