Fernet: a great drink for your trip to Buenos Aires

If you’ve just come to Buenos Aires and would love to engage yourself into the drinking culture of the locals, there is no doubt that you will soon become closely acquainted with the odd yet ever-alluring taste of Fernet Branca. The dark, syrupy alcoholic drink which is similar to an amaro has a standalone flavor that has been described as a cross between cough medicine, crushed plants and bitter mud. However, once mixed with coke, good company and a good atmosphere, Fernet will become your sidekick for the night never letting you down. An acquired taste perhaps – but a reliable one at that being available wherever you go.

The spirit was originated in Milan, Italy in 1845 by Bernardino Branca along with his three sons. The name “Fernet” came from a fictional Swedish Doctor who originally shared the recognition for the alcohol, seemingly to add authority to the health benefits the drink possesses. These include cures for menstrual cramps, being an excellent digestive aid and hangover cure and treatments for baby colic and cholera.

The secret recipe is concocted from the extract from over 40 different herbs and spices including saffron, aloe, rhubarb, gentian root and red cinchona bark taken supposedly from four different continents. This bitter balsam is then aged in oak barrels for at least a year and voilá!

Next time you’re in a bar or club and undecided on what to drink to get you buzzing – get your hands on a Fernet and Cola and see what all the fuss is about for yourself! ¡Salud!
